I took me a while to warm up to it but once I got into the book far enough I felt it was worth my time to read。

Science fiction。 Very long。 800+ pages。 A scientist on an exploratory mission to an uncolonized planet finds an alien relic。 Having no control over it, she finds it joining her body in a symbiotic relationship which changes her。 The discoveries on the planet lead to an intergalactic war with Kira at the center。 I kept reading to the end, but to me, the book was flawed。 I was never convinced to care about the characters that much。 Too many were one dimensional。 Toward the end the author reverts t Science fiction。 Very long。 800+ pages。 A scientist on an exploratory mission to an uncolonized planet finds an alien relic。 Having no control over it, she finds it joining her body in a symbiotic relationship which changes her。 The discoveries on the planet lead to an intergalactic war with Kira at the center。 I kept reading to the end, but to me, the book was flawed。 I was never convinced to care about the characters that much。 Too many were one dimensional。 Toward the end the author reverts to a style of writing details in a manual like form that made the ending implausible and uncreative。 Nope。 Just couldn't buy into the story - especially the alien's complete lack of personality。 Sorry。 I wanted to like it。 。。。more

Wtf was that??? Jellies? The nightmares? That's the best name he could come up with for alien lifeforms? 9 years to write this book and this is the concept he came up with? The terminology used is SO stupid and the characters are lame。 I realize that there are sci-fi/fantasy nerds that are into this but I almost quit reading it like 3x once when there was only 100 pages left。 This was absolutely horrible。 Wtf was that??? To me, Christopher Paolini's writing and story style was quite clear to me。 Despite the differences of genre between this sci-fi adventure and the massive Inheritance Cycle, I also saw many similarities - detailed world-building, long and exhaustive descriptions of fight scenes, an unfulfilling and rather lackluster romantic plot thread (view spoiler)[(I was picturing Falconi wayyyy too old for Kira so that was kind of weird) (hide spoiler)], and the MC embraces a new, powerful, unexpected desti To me, Christopher Paolini's writing and story style was quite clear to me。 Despite the differences of genre between this sci-fi adventure and the massive Inheritance Cycle, I also saw many similarities - detailed world-building, long and exhaustive descriptions of fight scenes, an unfulfilling and rather lackluster romantic plot thread (view spoiler)[(I was picturing Falconi wayyyy too old for Kira so that was kind of weird) (hide spoiler)], and the MC embraces a new, powerful, unexpected destiny (view spoiler)[to go sailing off alone into the unknown at the very end (hide spoiler)]。I found myself skipping through the many battle scenes。 The descriptions of alien ships and planets were in particular rather disorienting。 Less detailed would actually have helped me (personally) picture these settings more easily。 Also, the dream sequences were very hard to follow for me, due to the ambiguous POVs (is it Kira? is it the suit? is it both??) and verbose, floral language。 Thus, getting a grip on the backstory of the Soft Blade was kind of a struggle。However, I overall quite enjoyed the story。 The science seemed quite well-researched in my uninformed opinion (based on the descriptions in the main chapters, the "lecture" appendices, and Paolini's acknowledgements)。 The take on humans adapting to space and genetic modifications fascinated me。 I found all the characters either likeable, relatable, or if not compelling at least not obnoxious。 My favorite characters were hands-down Gregorovich and Itari。While there were quite a few loose ends that left me unsatisfied (view spoiler)[(the possibility of Kira becoming pregnant, what happened to the guy Iska who was stranded with Major Tschetter, the Entropists granting Kira passage to their home base - I'd have liked to see that!) (hide spoiler)], it leaves open the possibility that these could be addressed in sequels。 Not that this is necessarily Paolini's intent, but I could certainly envision as many as seven more books given how this story ends。 (view spoiler)[(Kira going after the seven remnants of the Maw) (hide spoiler)] I would read them, if they were written。 。。。more

Not a great book at all。 It was a slog from the first chapter, but I kept thinking it would get better。 It really did not。 It kept going on the same boring narrative。 I realized there was way too much detail about how the ships docked with one another。 And detail about other unnecessary detail。 I did only read the first half of the book (400 pages or so) and it still did not get better。 I am wishing there was something more I could say, but too many details were just boring。

Gabi

Great new concepts and world description。 It started for me bit like a cheap roman, but it gets better (hang on it is definitely worth it)。 I got lost in this world and it makes me think about things in my own life。 I could place myself in the shoes of Kira and go through the story with her。 If there would come a movie I would definitely want to see it。 It must be mind blowing。

FantasticThe pacing of this book is great, the story is well written and very well thought out。 If a bit technical at times, the world that Paolini has created is beautiful, creepy, bloody and hilarious。 I applaud this return to form for my favorite childhood author, and I cannot wait for more。

This is a really smart science fiction story with a really well thought out universe and believable concepts for interstellar travel and conflict。 I particularly enjoyed the interaction and growth between Kira and Soft Blade。 The story is longer and takes a little while to develop but the ending is very fast paced and engaging。 Very different from the Eragon series but I thoroughly enjoyed it。

Half-way review: This book is way too long for the mediocre sci-fi it provides。 I've read some really cutting edge stuff from the genre recently and this is not that。 No original ideas to be seen, just a standard sci fi first contact war。 Nothing about it feels futuristic, it's just modern day in spaceships。Please spare me from cis male writers trying to describe what having a period feels like。End book review: That was a lot of going to one place, fighting, going to another place, fighting, rep Half-way review: This book is way too long for the mediocre sci-fi it provides。 I've read some really cutting edge stuff from the genre recently and this is not that。 No original ideas to be seen, just a standard sci fi first contact war。 Nothing about it feels futuristic, it's just modern day in spaceships。Please spare me from cis male writers trying to describe what having a period feels like。End book review: That was a lot of going to one place, fighting, going to another place, fighting, repeat ad infinitum。I might have given this a pass had it been a 300 page book, not over 800 pages! Like, 1。5 stars。 Just good enough that I wanted to know how it ended, but it took me forever to get through because I was largely underwhelmed。 I had such high hopes given how much I loved the Eragon books。 So many other sci-fi books I would recommend before this one。

I was blown away by the world building and journey of this quite long story。 The author describes it in an interview as a series compressed into one book and it took him seemingly over a decade to complete。 From the level of precision around the science all the way to the internal journey of the protagonist, the effort shows。 Many stories end with a whimper and no direction, but here until the last pages you are carried away in a universe of a complexity and depth。 On a separate note, something I was blown away by the world building and journey of this quite long story。 The author describes it in an interview as a series compressed into one book and it took him seemingly over a decade to complete。 From the level of precision around the science all the way to the internal journey of the protagonist, the effort shows。 Many stories end with a whimper and no direction, but here until the last pages you are carried away in a universe of a complexity and depth。 On a separate note, something about the creativity of the language describing the indescribable state of the protagonist (will avoid providing further spoilers) was uniquely impressive。 These passages strained and stretched my imagination in ways I savored。 。。。more

Enjoyed the general arc of the story and thought the tiebacks and tieups towards the end were really interesting。 However。。。 I'm really not a fan of the writing style。 Just found myself too many times thinking "what, again with the space nausea?" or "great, more foreshadowing of the inevitable hookup"。 Enjoyed the general arc of the story and thought the tiebacks and tieups towards the end were really interesting。 However。。。 I'm really not a fan of the writing style。 Just found myself too many times thinking "what, again with the space nausea?" or "great, more foreshadowing of the inevitable hookup"。 。。。more

This book was awesome。 So freaking long, but r not boring or unnecessary。 I feel like it would be better as two books, but there's no good point to split it。 It rips off a lot of prior sci-fi material including movies and video games, but does so in fairly obvious ways that feel like homage yet still works while keeping the universe of the novel coherent。 The "boss" fights were ridiculous and epic, but I didn't hate them。 They felt like a video game, but with more randomness and intrusion of out This book was awesome。 So freaking long, but r not boring or unnecessary。 I feel like it would be better as two books, but there's no good point to split it。 It rips off a lot of prior sci-fi material including movies and video games, but does so in fairly obvious ways that feel like homage yet still works while keeping the universe of the novel coherent。 The "boss" fights were ridiculous and epic, but I didn't hate them。 They felt like a video game, but with more randomness and intrusion of outside forces than you would typically see。 I liked all the characters。 The aliens were flat, and some of the humans were shallow, but the main ones had some depth and complexity。 I can imagine several reasons other people might not enjoy this, but it was a perfect match for me。 。。。more
